Comment – A Holiday Full Of Work

In my early twenties the period between the 22 December and 3 January was full of drinking, eating and parties. It was a couple of weeks away from the day job set aside for fun and frivolity. Years later I find I still look forward to the holiday season, purely so I can get on with projects that have been waiting in the wings.

This time around the break that finished a couple of weeks ago was mostly taken up with the redesign of my web site, preparation for the podcasting of my weekly short stories and plenty of learning (about the other two). I did manage to fit in a couple of other things though.

There were some new brakes to fit to my bicycle; a replacement Hayes hydraulic with larger rotor at the front (which already had a hydraulic disc brake) and the same for the rear wheel instead of the cabled disc that was in place (I should have listened to what people said, cabled brakes simply aren’t worth the hassle).

A mass of articles I’d tagged on Twitter also needed looking at (marking something as a favourite is quickly becoming my main bookmarking service), and I had decided that my treat for this year would be to listen to the first two series of The Hitch Hikers Guide to The Galaxy (the original radio play); six hours of pure bliss.

Beyond that I had various chores to undertake and a little voice at the back of my head that said I needed to do some planning for food growing in 2011 (which still may or may not happen).

I enjoy all of this, in fact most of it I actually want to do, but a small part of me misses those bygone days when all I had to look forward to was two weeks of laying in bed until noon, and eating and drinking without a care in the world. Those days may return, but I suspect not until a time when I my joints are old and tired. Until then here’s to holidays full of work.
