Stay On Target

Following the anger at my own laziness during July (see here) I reacted in the usual way: over compensated. Let’s face it, I work best when am very busy (and interested).

The lack of reading was solved by putting aside a few hours one evening each week when I retire to the study (how old do I sound) and read. Nothing else (maybe some music). I treat it like work.

Then I decided to give the writing a kick and so was born the Friday flash fiction. This came about from two separate ideas: I’d already written some flash fiction (a story of less than 1,000 words) when I did The Sound of Silence, I didn’t know what flash fiction was at the time, but I’d had a lot of fun doing it and was rather pleased with the result; I had read a number of short stories that were published on a Saturday based on something that had happened during that week.

I therefore set myself a target to pick a news item during the week and by the Friday (morning ideally) publish a story about it. Good sense would say that I write something on a Saturday and publish it on a Monday, but Freak Angels and Makers have got me into spending half an hour each Friday reading stuff on the web, so I’d like to match this with my own work. Hopefully along the way I’ll entertain a few people as well.

So far both changes have been working well. The Friday flash fiction is the most difficult to sustain, but I like the challenge, and some interesting ideas have come out of it.
